  3. Kashmir. Occupied by Indian forces 1984, the
  4. glacier has been the focal point of a
  5. territorial dispute between India and
  6. Pakistan since independence 1947. Three wars
  7. in 1947, 1965, and 1971 resulted in the
  8. establishment of a temporary boundary between
  9. the two countries through the province of
  10. Jammu and Kashmir, but the accords failed to
  11. define a frontier in the farthest reaches of
  12. N Kashmir. Pakistan responded to the 1984
  13. Indian action by sending troops to the
  14. heights of the nearby Baltoro Glacier.
